However, the year he spent in office, shows the course of authoritarianism and the denial of the principle of checks and balances of the three branches of government, without which a mature democracy can not exist.

Despite the fact that the wording of the Constitution of 1996 - to which the current composition of the Verkhovna Rada returned last year - provides for people's deputies of the term of office of four years, which means that the elections were to be held in March this year.
It seems that the administration Yanukovych little monopoly on power, and it aims to secure - and the ruling Party of Regions - an indefinite stay in power.

If the current administration will continue to put up with mock courts, politicized prosecutors and law enforcement agencies, blatant conflicts of interest and the beating of opposition MPs, standing in her way, discontent will grow.

It is difficult to predict how the Ukrainians will respond to such an authoritarian regime until October 2012, when they will have the first opportunity to spend at least some changes in the elected leadership.

Ukrainian leaders should stop talking about European values ​​and act in accordance with. And it means transparent work of the government, there are no conflicts of interest, respect for freedom of speech and genuine application of the principle of checks and balances of the three branches of government for the creation of independent institutions in the Parliament, the judiciary and law enforcement system.

While Yanukovych will continue to lead the country down the wrong course, the future remains unpredictable. As a result, events may occur, compared with which the peaceful Orange Revolution in 2004 will seem just a dress rehearsal.
